Notebook Entry
Revision is a prominent feature of consistent creative practice. First drafts are helpful as you learn and grow, moving from idea development into creative action. Revision provides opportunities to further hone your skills while refining what you’re making. It can also be helpful to receive feedback from trusted sources.
Feedback can offer a community capable of assessing the project to identify what’s working well and what aspects could show improvement. Feedback can give you welcome perspective(s) on your work and also include ideas on how best to strengthen and support your project.
At times the overall experience of your creative project could be a lot like solving a puzzle—at various points you might have a number of pieces not yet connected. It’s possible, however, to encounter a difficult problem at any point during your making. Reframing the difficulty as an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and ingenuity helps create a path of growth and development. What has your project shown you? What do you know to be true?
There are times in your making when you’ll need help, and gaining support is the best next step. Guidance can come from a variety of sources: peers engaged in similar work, a trusted mentor, a workshop/retreat, and/or more formalized education over a longer term, etc.
Having a community with whom you can review and discuss your making helps foster optimal creative conditions. While community can look a little different for each of us, having creators you can take your questions and comments to is invaluable. Community creates shared experience through conversation, inspiration, and momentum, prompting your work towards completion.
In the final stages, there’s a sense that the pieces of the creative puzzle are coming together and this, in turn, creates anticipation and excitement for the appearance of the complete picture. What are you currently anticipating in your creative life?
Yours in the making,
Maryann
